AN OLD GUY WAKES UP IN A HOSPITAL AFTER A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ..
What’s so funny about this? On face value, there is nothing funny about this. And yet I chuckled. This kind of “dark humor” is found after catastrophes like deaths, accidents, explosions. It’s are designed to ease the pain and let off some steam. It’s an important function of humor. Those hearing or reading the joke or looking at the photo can all be relieved that it’s not them. I also had to find a benign or neutral photo. I couldn’t very well show an actual amputee or some other horribly mangled accident victim. You’ll notice that these kind of jokes are usually found in cartoons rather than realistic photos. So what’s the problem? Someone complaining about not feeling their legs is a common complaint after an amputation. We hear it all the time in movies and on TV. The usual twist on that is that the patient describes a pain or even an itch in their legs when they don’t realize yet that their legs have been amputated, cut off. I don’t know the statistics, but I suspect that leg amputations are more common than arm amputations, because of accidents, war injuries, or diabetes. But in the case of our joke, the reason the old guy can’t feel his legs is that his hands and arms are gone, leaving him nothing to feel with. And THAT’s what’s so bizarrely funny!
